Deborah Smith (nee Amos)

Hello,

My name is Deborah Smith (nee Amos). I was at the MNC from 1982 to 1985 on the Radio course.

I have been married to Philip Smith for nearly 14 years...not the Philip Smith lecturer...another one. I have a daughter of nearly five...about to start school!

Workwise, I left the college and went to work for a satellite organisation.

This was tracking the spacecraft, gathering telemetry and sending commands.

I started on shift, and as the only female in a serviceman's environment, it was quite daunting. I was promoted quickly to Senior engineer and after two years promoted to Project manager for a multi-million dollar enhancement.

I do have a claim to fame - I installed an air to ground voice link to talk to the Shuttle...my voice on "News at Ten" having a conversation about the weather with Bill Shepherd - one of the astronauts.

After there, I went to Mercury communications dealing with transmission and radios, and as technology went forward, so did I. Routers and IP networks, basic data networks. This progressed to Frame Relay and ATM. I left MCL after 7 years and went to IBM as the main point of contact for the global frame relay and ATM networks. After spending nearly 3 years here and making some "major" changes, employing a team of people to run the fault reporting, change control, admin etc. I left there and went to do the same at NTL.

I am still at NTL, after nearly 3 years.

Principal Network Engineer - ATM and Frame Relay
